Social Media – Bringing Us Together

Posted on July 7th, 2009 by Christopher Katis in Commentary

When I was a kid, my grandmother always sent her sister in Greece a letter once a month. And every month, she received a letter from her sister. Back then international telephone calls were expensive and the quality pretty sketchy, so they probably spoke on the phone only a handful of times in 70 years.

Flash forward to the 21st century, and their grandkids email each other a few times a month, and with improved technology and lower costs, we call each other a handful of times a year.

Our grandmothers would have been proud. But with social media, we can go beyond emails and sporadic calls! Social media allows us to stay better connected.

My favorite blog is my friend Ann’s – it’s a touching mix of life on the American prairie and the struggles of being the soul care taker of her mother, who has Alzheimers. If anyone still doubts the power of blogs, Ann’s was read by an HBO producer and she and her mom were included in a documentary about the disease.

I’ve become a self admitted Facebook junkie!  And keep nagging my cousin in Athens to get on board! I continue to be amazed at who finds me (and whom I find) on Facebook. Recently, I reconnected with my best friend growing up. A guy I hadn’t spoken to in 25 years!

Boy have things changed from my grandmother’s much-anticipated letters. But then that’s the power of social media.  Nominations are open. We need to hear from you.
